2018 Watty Winner of the Breakthroughs Award!

When sixteen-year-old Janie Myers’ grades hit an all-time low, she is pulled from her blow-off class with her best friend and placed into a course the guidance counselor says may help her: theater. There she meets a group of theater “misfits” who welcome her into their troupe, including Thatcher, a gawky boy who Janie secretly admires from freshmen year English class when he read Romeo’s lines in Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. 

After finally being diagnosed with dyslexia, Janie finds acceptance with her theater friends, despite her mom’s strict rules, her best friend Gina’s attempts to sabotage her, and her developing crush on Thatcher. Armed with a full troupe of actors, the misfit theater company takes on a one act play that will not only challenge Janie’s self-confidence, but also her commitment to her new group of friends. 

Thanks to her theater teacher’s connection with a former student turned television star, if her troupe does well with their one act, they’ll win an opportunity to be extras on Janie’s favorite television show. Will the misfits make it to Hollywood or will everything fall apart before the big performance?
